Last Saturday, the Queens University Ultimate team competed in the first tournament of their sophomore year. The team commuted to a very wet Dublin City University to play Indoor Intervarsity’s against 13 other teams from universities and colleges all across Ireland.
The team was quietly confident going into the weekend, having narrowly beaten Belfast team Deep Heat by a single point in a friendly at the Grove Wellbeing Centre on the previous Wednesday.
Queens narrowly missed out in the group stages with 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss, placing them 3rd in their group, which unfortunately meant the highest they could place was 11th to take the Wooden Spoon. Queens progressed through the knockouts with relative ease to finish 11th and take their first silverware (or woodenware!) of the season.
Queens rookie David Proctor impressed in his first tournament and was awarded the MSP award (Most Spirited Player) by the team. Coleraine ace David Scott was awarded MVP (Most Valuable Player) for a gutsy performance throughout the tournament.
The small team, captained by Alan Cooper, is going from strength-to-strength, with regular practices every Wednesday form 2-4pm at the Stranmillis Embankment, helping to bring beginners into the team and widening the scope of Belfast Ultimate. Queens will be competing in the upcoming Belfast Draft League from 28th Nov-12th Dec every Saturday morning at the Stranmillis Embankment.
