So here is the low down on cube...
...last week-end a swarm of bugs homed in on Aberdeen for the 2005 Beach Nationals, it was great
Here's who went :
1. Scott
2. Ob
3. Andy
4. Donal (well he was born in N.I )
5. Derryk
6. Naomi
7. Dave
8. Craig
9. Martin
At this point its good to clarify that any one who was born / lives in Northern Ireland qualifies for BUG :-)
A big thanks to craig and martin from Glasgow helped beef up a strong squad.
So the bug mobile left Belfast at 5.30 picked up Derryk in Glasgow and arrived in the pub 5 minutes before last orders!
It was a 16 team tournament with two pools of 8, then quarters, semis, final.
Teams entered were :
1. Positive Mojo 1 (Aberdeen)
2. Positive Mojo 2 (Aberdeen)
3. Positive Mojo 3 (Aberdeen)
4. Hallam Globetrotters (Sheffield)
5. Flyght Club (Nottingham)
6. DHB (Exeter)
7. Discuits (Reading)
8. TooManyPies 1 (Newcastle)
9. TooManyPies 2 (Newcastle)
10. UWE Disco (Bristol)
11. Stirling Blaze 1 (Stirling)
12. Stirling Blaze 2 (Stirling)
13. BUG (Belfast)
14. Dark Horses (Strathclyde)
15. Abertay Avatars (Dundee)
16. RoShamBo (Edinburgh)
Some how BUG were seeded 4th !!!
Sterling blaze 1 were 1st seeds
Positive Mojo 1 were 2nd seed
(I think Hallam Globe trotters were 3rd)
So having never played before the bugs were already confident, with games only lasting 20 minutes and there being 6 of them on Saturday starting each game quickly was crucial, and that they did.
winning all 6 games on Saturday against :
Dark Horses (Strathclyde)
Stirling Blaze 2 (Stirling)
UWE Disco (Bristol)
TooManyPies 2 (Newcastle)
DHB (Exeter)
Discuits (Reading)
RoShamBo (Edinburgh)
We had a full range of performances from :
The mandatory slow start for an irish team, almost going 2-0 down do Dark Horses until Donal chicken winged the disc into the end zone, to going 4-0 up against DHB on the uphill pitch!!, to grinding out a 2-1 win over Discuits ( who eventually finished 3rd), the bugs were looking good at the end of Day 1.
Things to Note
Weather cool, dry, low wind speed, not much to write home about. In warm up for a game Derryk dislocated the finger beside his little pinky, but we got him strapped up quicky and continued to play in a pivotel role in the team! Ob broke a finger nail too !
The party in The Northern Hotel, was pretty civilised affair, apart from the appearance of the loch ness monster!!
Sunday was one of those perfect days for ultimate, blue sky, heat haze and a slight breeze...then Positive Mojo 1 (Aberdeen) beagled us! It was the last of our pool games, we played hard but they had done their home work and preformed like the national winning side that they are, but were a little unlucky to be caught out so badly...its all in the preparation!
Back to the drawing board, before the quarter finals and after some tighter D and slicker O we narrowly lost to a fine Hallam Globetrotters (Sheffield).
Next was DHB (Exeter) and pretty good experienced team playing savage, again the game was tight but we beat them by the same score as in the pools 4-2.
Our 5/6 decider game was against TooManyPies 1 (Newcastle) which was a lot of fun and tight being decided by an early 2 point lead gained by Pies.
Positive Mojo 1 (Aberdeen) (containing Will who is really a bug) went on too meet Sterling 1 ( containing Mike from Therapy, also a bug ) in the final on the notorious up hill pitch, Sterling came from behind to win by 2 points with great games from will, mike, doug, sam and J.D. who won MVP.
A big thanks to all the bugs, and Naomi for having us in her flat and letting us make her play on Sunday morning! (see really is the best 1st cut)
Fun Ultimate, sunburn, beautiful location..and cheap flights, we'll be back next year!!!
Good luck to all the guys going to brugges this week-end.
Much disc love
Andy
