Hey bugs

we've got our first ever sliver ware.... :)
bug's took the sligo plate in considerable style at the week-end, at what was a mighty fine indoor tourni.
weather : blue skys , no wind , no rain ...perfect.
drive time : 2 1/2 hours
music : rem
accomodation : brand new student flats 100m from the sports hall and the pub (venue of parties on both nights)

saturday :

format 4 leagues of 4 teams.
top 2 teams in each league play in quater finals etc on for the cup against the other 6 teams who came 1st and 2nd
teams that came 3rd and 4th play it out on sunday for the plate.
bug were rather controversially draw in group of "death" :

jonny chimpo (last years winners and undefeated in 12-18 months, the best team in ireland)
dcu (a pretty good uni team)
bug (the wild card)
super heros (sligo 3rd team)

1st game
vs dcu 9.30
bugs had an impressive tactic of get the opposition drunk on the friday night and catch them cold 1st thing on saturday.
the bugs were the first to arrive at the hall at 8.45am for a warm up and drill session...yes your eyes are not decieving you.
this clearly worked as bug were quickly 2-0 up and lead or most of the game.
60 seconds to go 7-7 dcu on offence. we defended like giants, got the turnover with 6 seconds to go, unforturnately johns back was to the clock, and the ultimate crowd had not woken up yet to give him a count down, events conspired against us but a draw was a fine result as we played iron man, and dcu had 3/4 subs.

dcu played superheros and beat the 12-1 to put the pressure on bug.

2nd game
vs jonny chimpo 12.30ish
so we now have to ensure our points difference is better than dcu's to make the top half of the draw.
with a reinforcements from team america / pookas in paganello in the shape of scott p and jerry we faced up the best team in ireland.

we begun nervously with out a solid game plan, largely my fault. but after we were about 4-0 down we re-grouped and begun to start making a game of it.
nathan put the chimps off with his american football style defence, simon's go go gadget arms in the zone worker a treat, Scot catching everything thrown within 3 metres of him, cool distribution by ob, john and i just ran arround midfield like head less chickens and jerry's put in a timely point block.
it was pretty hectic and the chimps admitted to being a little rattled with 5 minutes to go but the final score was 10-6 to Jonny Chimpo.
perhaps not the sexyest bug ultimate bug certainly a great result again a high quality team.

3rd game
vs super heros (sligo 3 ) 2.50ish
so after running arround all morning trying to calculate all the points difference possiblities and just getting a sore head, we decided we had to beat sligo by about 12 points to have a good chance of going through. as the game was only 18 min. and bugs have had limited match play in the last 3 months we decided we had to just play a fast game...sligo turned up on the line 55 seconds late, my patience was slipping ( for future reference bugs if you need your opposition on the line on time tell them before hand as i forgot to and they were not really late enough for us to benefit from it )
so we pushed on a dominated the game and won it about 11-1

dcu vs chimpo was the crucial game which decided who made the top half of the draw.
chimpo had to defeat dcu by 6 points for a draw and 7 points for bug to go through.
the game was tight only 2/3 points in it throughout the game, courtesy of chimpos fast start again.
however in the final 2 minutes chimpo scored twice in a row, with 10 seconds to go they turned it over again,
dcu have a reputation for choking in that later stages of a game, the pass was made to chris in the end zone with 2 seconds on the clock ,
but chris droped it....

so simon and nathan headed home along with ob. john and i were left to fly the bug flag at the grease themed party, and that we did.
however it must be noted john who's line was now ' do you know i'm only 16' was safely tucked up in his sleeping bag after watching match of the day.
at 1.30 was on wake-able as he slept beneth the window!

Sunday

maximium respect goes out to ob for driving back to belfast on sat. nite and picking up our secret weapon on mass destruction at 6am on sunday to drive back to sligo:

it was painfully efficent and sexy

flaws in the draw were being exposed but we were now just having fun.
bugs won 12-4

team america vs bug

so both teams we tight on numbers and had helped each other out through out the tourni. the prospect of a 30minute ironman final was looming.
bug we're still short a player and enlisted the help of our host at wacking day yvonne to even of the boy-girl ratio a little.
team america had already taken the scalps of dcu2 and sligo2 with they're 1-3-1 zone tactic.
however bug were wise to this and played 2 players long.
yiv and ob were great handlers showing patience in picking out the killer pass against the zone,
john had his best game of the tourni, with some fine mid field defence and cuts into the zone. definately most improved player over the week-end.
kevin was selected to mark 'the catching machine' scott out of the game, and he certainly did that for the whole 30min and had time to throw in a little belguin flair into the game. i seemed to have easy job as everyone else was winning their individual battles!
it finished 12-4
a rather undeserved mvp in the final fell my way but the the teams promised to hook up again for slug in dub 05 and pookas in Italy !

come see the silver ware on thursday night in the park at 5-7pm.
training on saturday 11-1.30 then we'll probably watch the rugby nearby.
sorry for being so long winded but it wwas that good.
